While Monotype's original letterpress versions, like the original, had pronounced ascenders for the letters b, d, f, k and l, these have been shortened to uppercase height in most of the versions available for computers today. The italic style of the Bembo goes back to a sample book by the Italian callist Giovanni Tagliente from 1524.īased on these templates, the Bembo used today was redrawn for Monotype in 1929 by the type artist Stanley Morison (according to other sources by Alfred Fairbank ) and named after Bembo. The De Aetna-Type formed the basis for the much better known Garamond, but has more angular serifs than this. As of January 2021, it doesn't entirely work anymore, even if used on the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine, as Adobe Flash had ended its support on websites. It went up in 2000, and went defunct in late 2017.
